Vehicle Equipment Regulations. Change for the better!

As of now, electronic equipment that is to be fitted to vehicles, but is not driver or safety related does not have to be e or E marked. for the past five years, any equipment connected directly to the vehicle power had to be manufacturred and type approval tested under strict EC and Vehicle Inspectorate rules. Although there is a requirement to meet standards, and to have a declaration, much as with a CE mark, the need for laborious tests is discontinued. The new situation is still regulated, but with a lighter touch. See www.vca.gov.uk or follow this link for more information. This good news means that it will be simpler to provide and connect additional IT equipment in a vehicle, provided it does not affect safety or the vehicle operation.

Installation code of practice

The Federation of Communication Services (FCS) publishes a useful update of the MPT 1362 code of practice for installers of equipment in vehicles. Although intended for Radio installers it has relevance to those installing computer devices. The code can be obtained from the FCS website www.fcs.org.uk
