Utilities Hotspot Workshop Date Confirmed

MCUG Clinic at SME 16th and 17th Sept NEC Birmingham UK
The MCUG service clinic at SME proved popular. Many attendees were from the SME sector, looking for solutions that would economically scale to smaller operations. Data gathering was a major preocupation in this sector, where service reports and parts usage need to be tracked. We found ourselves discussing RFID tags and Bar Codes as ways to speed the data collection process and reduce errors. It is still the case that it is better to look for one or two killer applications to mobilise rather than trying to change the whole business process, people looking for solutions where some features may only be used once per week. The MCUG's consulting team included experts from Cognito, SouthEast water, Wheatstone Consulting, Matthews Craig, and OSYS technology.
Ground Probing Radar Workshop 19th June 08
The MCUG, is involved through OSYS technology in forming a user group for a Ground Probing Radar (GPR) project called ORFEUS. The workshop is on the 19th June at Birmingham University. Please follow the link below to the ORFEUS web site for details. For those unfamiliar with GPR, this technology allows users to see several metres under the street without digging, and can identify both metalic and plastic, clay, or brick structures, sewers and pipes. A sophisticated Radar scanner and mobile computer system produce a map of the plant, that can be used by Highway Authorities and Utilities without any digging. Please visit http://www.orfeus-project.eu for more information or contact the MCUG secretariat.
Return of the MCUG Forum;Call for papers
Summer sees the return of the popular MCUG Forum. We expect to have the event at the MotorCycle Museum, just near to the Birmingham NEC, and are lining up topics and speakers from the user community. If you are an end user and want to share good or bad experiences then we want to hear from you. Speakers attend for free, get a free seat at the dinner, and a really good opportunity to network with peers. We do not need flashy presentations, just tell it as it is, or bring the kit and some photos along and show what the issues are. Some presentations are technical, but most focus on the business; Your Business - the reasons, the benefits, and all those organisational and workforce issues. Interested? Mail us with Your thoughts .
Equipment Exchange
At MCUG we realise that supporting mature mobile systems can be a headache. You may run short of older compatible equipment needed to extend the system life. Conversley - Are you planning to replace mobile equipment in the next few months which still has useful life left in it? We might be able to find just what you are looking for or may be able to help pass your used kit on to someone else. Drop us an email. with your surplus or your wants.
Discussion Board Temorary Closure
We've had reports that we at the secretarait have been missing emails. A flood of spam, due to a vulnerabiliity in the discussion board has overloaded the email filters. Profuse apologies to anybody who has been ignored. Once it is robust against exploits we may reintroduce it. In the mean time contact the MCUG Secretary, Martin Morey
